Did you know? 🤔 Harbour Town’s iconic lighthouse in Hilton Head Island, USA, the one you see on postcards, golf broadcasts, and travel guides, isn’t actually a real lighthouse.

Built in 1970 mainly as a visual landmark for the newly developed Harbour Town Marina, it was never intended to guide ships or serve any navigational purpose. Instead, it was designed simply to look impressive, add character to the waterfront, and become a photogenic symbol of the community, which it absolutely did!

Today, the red-and-white tower is one of Hilton Head’s most recognizable attractions and proof that sometimes, even a fake lighthouse can become a real icon.

Royal Dornoch is also famed for inspiring one of the greatest golf course architects of all time Donald Ross. Born in Dornoch, Ross carried the philosophy of its natural, flowing greens and challenging run-offs to America, where he designed nearly 400 courses. While Cruden Bay is what every golfer's dreams are made of, the backdrop is a bit more sinister. The ruins of Slains Castle, visible from most of the golf course (top right corner of the photo), served as the visual inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Stoker was a regular visitor to Cruden Bay in the late 1800s, walking these cliffs and writing early chapters of his vampire masterpiece while looking out over the very dunes golfers play over, through and around today.

Did You Know? 🤔 The iconic island green on the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, which is one of the most nerve-wracking shots in golf, was never meant to be an island green at all.

During course construction, the legendary Pete Dye and his wife Alice Dye were excavating sand to build other parts of the Stadium Course. The area around the 17th was supposed to be a simple pond framing a traditional green, but as they kept digging, the pit grew deeper and wider until the land that held the green was almost completely surrounded by water. Rather than fill it back in, Alice Dye suggested embracing the natural “mistake” and transforming the accidental peninsula into the now-legendary island green.

Today, it is one of golf’s most photographed and feared holes, turning a construction mishap into an unforgettable masterpiece.

The Blue Course has hosted some of the sport’s biggest moments, including multiple @rbccanadianopen and the @presidentscup, drawing the world’s best players to Canadian soil. Today, the club stands as an important piece of golf history for a continent and is a true Canadian icon for the game.

Golfers visiting Shadow Creek find it hard to comprehend how its lush fairways, dense forests, flowing streams, and tranquil lakes were created. The property bears no resemblance to the barren landscape that originally occupied the site or the surrounding desert area.

Visionary developer Steve Wynn, and renowned architect Tom Fazio, spent tens of millions of dollars sculpting the terrain, trucking in vast quantities of soil, and planting more than 20,000 mature trees to create the illusion of a natural, secluded oasis. An intricate network of pumps and irrigation lines keeps the course green and thriving in one of the driest climates in the United States.

Today, Shadow Creek is celebrated not only for its exclusivity and pristine conditioning, but also for the sheer ambition and creativity that transformed an empty stretch of desert into one of the most visually striking golf courses in the world.

Did you know? 🤔 Ireland's @oldheadgolflinks in Kinsale is the site of numerous shipwrecks throughout history?

Old Head sits atop a spectacular 300-foot-high promontory that juts dramatically into the Atlantic Ocean and it has centuries of maritime lore attached to it. Its cliffs, rocky outcrops, and unpredictable waters have been the site of numerous shipwrecks, most famously, the RMS Lusitania which was torpedoed and sank just off the Old Head coastline in 1915. This ominous background makes the waters around the headland a focal point of nautical tragedy and legend.

The golf course itself leverages this dramatic setting with holes that skirt cliff edges. Sea spray rises from far below and the views stretch endlessly across the Atlantic. The result is a layout that feels intertwined with centuries of seafaring history, geology, and natural drama. Old Head is arguably one of the most striking and atmospheric golf environments in the world.

Did you know? 🤔 Before it became one of Canada’s top golf clubs, @stgeorgesgolfclub actually started as a luxury perk for guests of Toronto’s @fairmontroyalyork Hotel.

Back in the day, hotel guests could hop into a chauffeured limousine that ran between the hotel and the club and travel in style to their golf haven. The clubhouse had 28 bedrooms and stayed open year-round, which was rare for clubs at the time. Guests could stay the night for $3, or move in for a month for $40.
