St. George’s Golf and Country Club Review

St. George's Golf & Country Club

↑ St. George’s Golf & Country Club works its way through numerous natural valley’s and along various ridges

Located in Etobicoke in the west side of Toronto, St. George’s Golf and Country Club was established in 1929. Designed by prolific Canadian golf course architect Stanley Thompson, it is consistently ranked among the top 100 golf courses in the world.

Originally known as the Royal York Golf Club, St. George’s was conceived to cater to guests of the Royal York Hotel in Downtown Toronto. The vision was to provide a luxurious retreat for travellers, complete with a world-class golf course. Stanley Thompson, Canada’s preeminent golf course architect at the time, was commissioned to design the course, which opened its doors in 1929. By 1946, the partnership with Canadian Pacific Railway had run its course and the club was renamed St. George’s Golf and Country Club. Over the decades, it has hosted the Canadian Open six times.

Thompson’s design philosophy often times emphasized harmony with the natural landscape, and St. George’s is a prime example of this approach. The course meanders through forested glacial terrain, featuring curving fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and greens perched on natural mounds. In 2014, the club undertook a comprehensive restoration of all 18 greens, collaborating with architects Tom Doak and Ian Andrew, to faithfully recreate Thompson’s original designs.

Without a doubt, St. George’s lives up to its billing and place in the world of golf.
