Few places in the world announce their golfing heritage as immediately as Gullane Golf Club. Perched on Scotland’s “Golf Coast,” the club is home to three incredible routings, and Gullane No. 1 is the crown jewel. The moment you step onto the first tee you know you are about to play something truly special.
A Course Steeped in History
Founded in 1884, Gullane No. 1 has hosted some of golf’s greatest tournaments including The Scottish Open and qualifying rounds for The Open Championship. The course’s pedigree is undeniable, but what makes it exceptional is its history and genius routing upon 6,873 yards of glorious linksland turf. Gullane No. 1 is a true masterclass in links golf design. Its architect, Willie Park Sr., used the land’s natural contours rather than forcing features into place. The round begins inland and rises steadily toward Gullane Hill offering panoramic views across East Lothian and as far as Edinburgh on a clear day. From there, holes tumble back toward the sea, constantly shifting direction to test your ability to adapt to the wind. With the amount of elevation change on property, one would think No. 1 a difficult walk, but it is far from it. The elevation change is diffused in incredible ways, providing not only some of the best views in golf, but wonderful golf holes. The greens, with plenty of run-offs, punish imprecision. You’ll undoubtedly find yourself weighing whether to fly the ball to the flag or run it up along the firm, fast turf.
