Nestled between the shores of Lake Michigan and the clear blue waters of Crystal Lake in Frankfort, Michigan, Crystal Downs Country Club is one of the worlds finest golf designs. Laid out by the legendary Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1928 (of Augusta National fame), the course remains largely unchanged, preserving its original design and offering golfers an authentic experience in MacKenzie’s genius.
A Historic Start
The inception of Crystal Downs was driven by Walkley Ewing, a Grand Rapids real estate developer. In 1927, he incorporated the club and enlisted MacKenzie to design the course. The clubhouse, perched on a high bluff overlooking the two lakes, was crafted by a Grand Rapids architect and has endured in its original design, with careful restorations preserving its charm.
One-Of-A-Kind
Crystal Downs is a par-70 layout measuring just over 6,500 yards from the back tees. While it may not be the longest course, it more than compensates with its strategic design taking advantage of various natural ridges and a set of meticulously maintained and conniving MacKenzie greens.
The front nine here is possibly one of the most natural nine holes a golfer can find with some of the more noteworthy holes among top courses in the world. Holes of note include the par-4 5th with its tee shot over a ridge, the exquisite 7th and it boomerang green, and the wild, tumbling par-5 8th, where a flat lie can only be dreamed of.
The back nine takes golfers up higher on the property, working its way around parts of the land that elicit feelings of being transported to the great English heathland courses. With less tumble, it is an experience in tranquility interspersed with an occasional stroke of realism after the almost certain 3-putt you will have at some point. Along the way you’ll find the beautiful, short par-3 14th, and the magnificent short par-4 17th.
Final Thoughts
I urge anyone visiting Crystal Downs to walk the golf course. Despite the hills, feet on the ground will offer you a unique perspective into one of the worlds truly great golf courses, great walks, and great settings.
